This post is in response to Mae Mae's post, whose post is in response to Mama Kat's writing prompt: Describe a time you felt startled.
So right off the bat... before even reading the above posts...I thought of a few incidents that I thought would be fun to share.
*Disclosure: my mom and I thought it was REALLY fun to scare each other on a regular basis by either hiding, jumping, or putting fake snakes underneath each others pillows all throughout my childhood so that definitely carried over into after I left the house (my poor college roommates!). Since graduating from college (Go Owls, Hoot Hoot!), I have refrained from scaring anyone I live with (Steven) except for every once in awhile I will scare my dog, Booti, when he has the hiccups (which by the way, that never works... but it is funny to see him jump. I know, I am so bad!). The reason I refrain from scaring Steven is because I know he has a pretty good reflex and he would punch me without thinking! haha But don't get me wrong... I still think about scaring him all of the time and sometimes I will try and hide, ready to take a punch, but for some reason he always knows where I am!
So here are a few good ones:
1. After dark, I was walking into my mom's house (when I still lived there... so in high school) and after closing the front door, my mom popped out of the room off of the foyer and screamed.... I FREAKED out, started screaming and tried to turn around and get back out the door but I slipped on the rug I was on and fell flat on the floor and started crying because I couldn't do anything else. My mom busted out laughing. I didn't think it was very funny at the time because I was HONESTLY so scared but I am definitely laughing out loud now!
2. In elementary school, my best friend, Rachel Stanley (who is still my best friend to this day!), and I lived right next door to each other. We were inseparable so we were always at her house or mine. Every time we saw the BFI trash service truck come by to get the trash at our neighbors house we thought it was the FBI so we would stop whatever we were playing with and go hide! We were so scared that they were going to scoop us up. First of all.... why did we think the BFI was the FBI when it clearly said B.F.I.? Second... why would we (little elementary school girls) be scared of the FBI anyway, what the heck did we have to hide? haha
3. This one happened... oh... last week! You know those times that you get scared of someone that just walks in a room because you didn't expect them to be there? Well I had just gotten out of the shower and I was getting ready in the bathroom (while Steven was at the gym) and I walked out of the bathroom and turned the corner and Steven was just simply walking into room but since I didn't hear the garage door or him walking in the house, Steven said I gasped (too scared to even scream) and I put my hands up in a fighters position but then I just froze and fell over on the bed. We both laughed about it for about 5 minutes and of course, Steven had to re-enact what he had just seen! :)
4. Another mom story. I was probably a 5th grader and I had just gotten home from school so I can imagine that I was being a good girl and doing my homework or something (that is what I probably told my mom!) and my mom calls from work and said that she just got notice that a big delivery just got to our house and if I could go out and make sure everything she ordered was in the box. So I open the front door and there is a HUGE box... I mean ginormous cardboard box on our front porch. I get all excited thinking it was a gift for me but when I get on my tippy toes and start opening the box, someone jumps out from the box and yells. I think I might have peed my pants a bit! Come to find out... my mom had sent one of her clients with that box to our house to do that. I told you that it was a cruel game we used to play on each other. It sure is funny now though!
5. I JUST remembered this one as I was typing the last one.... can't believe this wasn't the first one I thought of. I was, again, in elementary school and my mom and I had just gotten home so I went upstairs to change for bed (so it was dark outside) and my mom was downstairs opening the mail. Once i got to the top of the stairs and turned down the hallway to my room, I SWEAR I saw a man with a gun pointing towards me straight ahead in my moms room so I literally (no joke!) jumped from the top of the stairs to the bottom, stumbled on the last few that I didn't clear, booked it past my mom while screaming what I had just seen, and didn't stop until I got into Rachel's bathroom (where she was just merrily taking a bath!). My mom obviously had followed right behind me and after I caught my breath, I could tell her exactly what I saw. We made Rachel's dad (thank you Tom!) go check through the whole house. What a brave man. He actually had to do that multiple times. I guess I have one heck of an imaginary mind! Needless to say, he didn't find the guy.... or anything for that matter. Whew!
6. Last one, I promise! This actually isn't of me being startled but of me startling my roommate! (Hi Sam!). So I had 2 awesome college roommates in the dorm and Leslie and I liked to scare Sam all of the time. So 1 night Sam had mentioned to us on the phone on her way home from work that she couldn't wait to be there because she had to use the restroom. So what do Leslie and I do before she gets there? We hide in her shower! So Sam comes home and goes straight to her bathroom and as she was relieving herself, we jump out of the shower! HAHA you can just imagine what she did! Well being the cruel ones that we were, we didn't stop there! Later that night she was on her bed chatting with some guy she was dating and Leslie and I enter her room to talk with her and somehow Leslie distracted her while I hid under the bed. Then Leslie leaves. I wait about 5 minutes while she continues to talk to her boytoy (so she doesn't think that someone still might be in there) and then I jump up and grab her legs. I have never seen someone so startled in my life! oh my. Those were the good ole days!
So those were just some of my favorite stories! Now I just get a kick out of watching all of the pranks that air on TV. Punk'd, College Humor, Scare Tactics, etc!
